Construction on the palm islands began in 2001. The project comprises three artificial islands: “Palm Jebel Ali”, “Palm Jumeirah" and " Palm Deira". The islands were build offshore Dubai and are considered the world’s largest artificial islands. Designed by "Nakheel”, the three islands are referred to as the eighth world wonder.
"Palm Jumeirah"
Palm Jumeirah, palm tree-shaped man-made island, the smallest of the three islands, is divided into 17 huge fronds and a trunk, and surrounded by a crescent shaped barrier reef.
Palm Jumeirah has more than 1,700 residential units with a built up area of 3,500 square feet, and Garden Villas (on 6, 5000 square feet plot) and villas on a 13,000 square feet plot.
The "Palm Jumeirah" project built on the islands, which depends maritime character, provides marine equipment and luxurious facilities open to local and visiting yachts.
"Palm Jebel Ali"
"The Palm Jebel Ali," which is 30% larger than the Palm Jumeirah, is a two -separated island with no link between them, each has its own structure and independent link with land.
"The Palm Jebel Ali" first island consists of the trunk which stems from the coast of Dubai, the Crown and the fronds. The palm-shaped island is surrounded by the crescent-shaped second island which consists of five semi-circled parts lined by bridges. The canal separating the crescent from the palm tree is a line of poetry by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which reads:
It takes a man of vision to write on water
Not everyone who rides a horse is a jockey
"The Palm Jebel Ali", which began construction in 2002, is one of the outstanding commercial, residential and tourist projects in Dubai. Along with the Water Front project, the Palm Jebel Ali is expected to converge a vast area of desert and sea into global community that is packed with vigor and activity given the expected total population will rise to 1.7 million by 2020.
"Palm Deira"
Stretching on an area of 80 square kilometers between Dubai Creek and the borders of Sharjah, Palm Deira is the largest of the Palm Islands, consisting of nine key elements, including five basins Marina, the Deira Island, the Mamzar Island, the South island in addition to North and the Middle which are about 150 meters from Sharjah. The Island, linked to the mainland by several bridges, will be an extension of the existing road transport network as well as the future of Dubai Metro system.
A total of 65% of the entire project will be used for residential purposes. Besides, Palm Deira will include an area stretching over 4 square km to be the headquarters for various recreational activities and water games.
World’s Islands - The world
The World or World Islands is an artificial archipelago of various small islands constructed in the rough shape of a world map, located 4 kilometres off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid.
The project consists of 300 small and private man-made islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands.
Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island.
The World covers a total area of 9 kilometres in length and 6 kilometres in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine or air transport.
