In 1980, the “Gulf Air" began to cut back its services to Dubai. As a result, Emirates was conceived in 1985 with backing from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. On 25th October 1985, Emirates flew its first routes out of Dubai with just two aircraft-a leased Boeing 737 and an Airbus 300 B4. The inaugural flight took from Dubai bound for Pakistan’s Karachi then to Mumbai and Delhi in India. November 27th, 2013 is marked by many as the day Dubai fully recovered from the global financial crisis that hit most of the world in 2008. It is on that day that Dubai rose again with a well-earned trust of the international community to host the World Expo 2020. Dubai successfully won the bid to host the mega event against prominent world cities of Izmir, Turkey; Sao Paulo, Brazil and Ekaterinburg, Russia with a total of 116 votes. For its bid to host the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, the UAE has selected the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” Furthermore, a World Expo in Dubai in 2020 will be the first to be held in the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) region. Dubai Expo 2020 will be a platform for connectivity to help pioneer new partnerships for growth and sustainability for the future. It is expected that this grand achievement, which will be held over a period of six months, will help create more than 280,000 new jobs and sustain around 1,400,000 jobs across the wider MENASA region between 2013 and 2021. Construction on the palm islands began in 2001. The project comprises three artificial islands: “Palm Jebel Ali”, “Palm Jumeirah" and " Palm Deira". The islands were build offshore Dubai and are considered the world’s largest artificial islands. Designed by "Nakheel”, the three islands are referred to as the eighth world wonder. "Palm Jumeirah" Palm Jumeirah, palm tree-shaped man-made island, the smallest of the three islands, is divided into 17 huge fronds and a trunk, and surrounded by a crescent shaped barrier reef. Operation of passenger terminal at the "Dubai World Central Airport" was started on October 27, 2013. It is the second airport in Dubai, after the completion of a passenger terminal in 2012. The "Dubai Airports" have opened a cargo terminal at the same airport in June 2010 and soon became one of the most important centers in the region, where 36 aviation companies operate scheduled and charter flights. "DWC” was established in line with the ambitious vision, launched by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, necessitating the need to make history and look to the future with confident steps. The project was designed to meet Dubai’s needs in the fields of aviation and tourism, trade and logistics until 2050.
